Infant and Toddler Activities

 

If you need ideas for activities for your infant or toddler,

below is a collection of activities I put together when my youngest daughter was a baby.

 

Where possible, I will provide links for items within the table.

In addition, there are links to further resources (offsite) for infants and toddlers below.

Daily Floor Time Gross Motor Read
  • Crawl

  • Peek a boo (with hands/blanket/clith, etc)

  • Games and activities (duck, duck, goose, etc)

  • Gross motor

  • Play with toys

  • Bouncing

  • Swaying

  • Swooping

  • Swinging

  • Rolling Balls

  • Crawling

  • Creeping

  • Walking

  • Running

  • Chase (on knees/foot)

  • Scribbling (tape paper to the floor)

  • Pour sand and rice

  • Picture books

    • Point to objects as you name them

    • Let baby point and you name them

    • Describe what is in the pictures

  • Quraan in Arabic

  • Quraan in English

  • Islamic stories or ahadith

General Games/Activities Concepts Toys
  • Mirror Play

    • Make funny faces

    • encourage movement

    • patty cake

    • follow the leader (e.g. clap, flap arms, etc)

    • Role play (play tea party, etc)

  • Where did it go?

    Take objects out of sight and put back

  • Directions

    Give 1 step directions "Give me..., put the ____ in the ______"

  • Imitation Games

    Cough, sneeze, make animal sounds and let baby imitate

  • Put toys out of reach and have baby retrieve them

In speech, introduce and develop the following concepts:

 

  • soft/hard

  • fast/slow

  • under/over

  • wet/dry

  • up/down

  • in/out

  • empty/full

  • stand/sit

  • big/little

 

This is a__________. Tell baby what it is used for.

 

Cause/Effect.

When talking with baby, say "If we_____ then _________."

 

Colors/Adjectives

Mention the colors of items as you talk about/use them.  "I like this blue shirt."

 

Pronouns

Use a name in a sentence, then repeat the sentence with a pronoun

Junk box:

 

 Place items in for baby to feel, poke, squeeze (tissue paper, socks, measuring ups, scarf, egg cartons, etc).

 

 

Put and Take Toys

Have baby place objects in containers and take them back out.

 

Containers with lids to open and close
