TJ's Daily Name Recognition/Writing Routine
Looking at a printed copy of student's name:
1. If student does not know name by sight: Point to printed version of student's name and tell student that this is his/her name.
2. If student has learned the names of some letters of the alphabet, have student begin spelling his/her name while looking. Help student with the letters he/she does not know.
3. If student has learned what vowels are, have student tell you which letters in his/her name are vowels.
4. Have student count the number of letters in his/her name.
5. Have student practice writing his/her name*. See TJ's Penmanship Page for a blank writing grid which student can practice writing his name on. You can augment or substitute the writing practice part with other types of activities. See TJ's preschool page for links to name recognition/writing activities.
For example:
Rainbow Writing: Student can write name in crayon or marker and trace over name again and again in a different color marker each time. Use seven different colors for each color of the rainbows.
Name tiles. Using paper tiles or letter magnets, have student arrange the letters in his/her name in order. Provide a written copy of student's name to use as a guide.
Have student write his/her name with his finger in sand or rice tubs, etc.
*If student has the motor skills to write his/her name, providing written practice daily helps student to recognize his name fairly quickly, insha Allah.
