"Getting Started" Homeschooling Guide
1. Making the Decision to Homeschool/Educate at Home
Some Things to Consider:
Is it permissible for Muslims to put their children in the schools of the non-Muslims? Fatawa from Bakkah.net
Is Homeschool for You? Homeschool Decision - 10 Things to Consider - About.com
Homeschooling Laws: Legal Information by State (USA)
Now that you have decided to educate at home:
2. What will your children learn/what will you teach? Why?
1. Review syllabi, scopes and sequences, curricula.
2. Purchase or make your own curriculum.
Some syllabi/courses of study to start with:
Links forthcoming, insha Allah, but you can "google" key words from below and should turn up the sites mentioned.
Secular:
World Book Course of Study.
Lists courses of Study for preschool - 12th grades. Not extremely detailed but a good starting point, insha Allah.
(Links to the course of study for individual grades can be found below in the ABCs of Homeschooling under G - Grade Resources)
Islamic:
IBERR Islamic Studies Syllabi (Grades 1 - 12)
Bureau of Islamic and Arabic Education (BIAE) (PreK -8)
Islamic Education Foundation K - 12)
(Please note, I found each of these very helpful, but I did come across a few things in the IBERR syllabi that I had not heard of and in the Islamic Ed foundation, something that I learned was an innovation) but overall, they were a great help so I am including them. Also note, I am not endorsing the book lists found in any of the syllabi, as I came across a few questionable authors. I try to stick with the Quraan and works from scholars as much as possible to base our own studies upon and personally do not use the book lists given although, most or some may be appropriate, Allahu ilm. TJ is working on an Islamic Curriculum of its own---sample-Kindergarten curriculum
3. How will you teach?/How will your children learn?
Research Homeschooling Methods - (not necessary, but helpful)
See ABCs of Homeschooling M - Methods of Homeschooling
You may find that you like elements from more than one method. We are "eclectic" homeschoolers (if you want to use labels) as we borrow methods from a variety of homeschooling methods.
4. When will you teach/When will your children learn?
See TJ's Scheduling and Routines Pages for sample schedules and scheduling tips.
Take advantage of (but don't overmilk :) ) all the natural teachable/learning moments that occur daily in your normal routines/living.
Not all learning takes place in "class"
