Lesson 2: Alif and Baa
How many letters are there in the Arabic alphabet?
The word for "letter" in Arabic is harf.

The first letter of the Arabic alphabet is 
The second letter of the Arabic alphabet is 
Say the names of these letters after your teacher.
1. Listen to your teacher read the letters on the ladder (sullam). Teacher, where possible, introduce any Arabic vocabulary that is mentioned in the lessons to student, such as sullam.
2. Your Turn: Say the letters as you go up each ladder.
(Teacher, repeat drill several times)


What animal do you see below?
This is a rabbit. The word rabbit in Arabic is arnab. Arnab starts with the letter alif.
How many alif's can you find in the picture below? Circle each alif that you find.

What fruit do you see below?
An orange. The word for orange in Arabic is burtuqal. Burtuqal starts with the letter baa.
How many baas can you find in the picture? Circle each baa with an orange crayon. The word for the color orange is Arabic is also burtuqal.

Dictate the letters alif and baa to student to write.
Redo each set of the ladder drills, 1x each.
Ask student what the first letter of the alphabet is.
Ask student what the second letter of the alphabet is.

Today, add only the alif and baa cards to the deck. As each letter is introduced, add it to the deck. Review daily. You might also want to make a vocabulary/concept deck. This should be reviewed daily as well, insha Allah.
After this lesson, the following cards (homemade) could be added to the vocabulary/concept deck:
How many letters are there in the Arabic alphabet?
What is the word for letter in Arabic?
Picture cards: rabbit, orange, ladder. Show picture and ask student to identify these words in Arabic.
