Care of Hair

Discuss:

  • When to wash hair

  • How to wash hair (demonstrate/walk through process); how much shampoo/conditioner to use; selecting hair products (what ingredients to look for in a product).

  • Grooming. Review/show how to groom hair and when; talk abut selecting brushes and combs and other grooming aids.

  • Shaving body hair. How often, how to, what to use, reason for doing so:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Apostle said, "Five practices are characteristics of the Fitra: circumcision, shaving the pubic region, clipping the nails and cutting the moustaches short." (Bukhari)

  • Start a hygiene reminder book. List tips for taking care of hair in it.

  • Extras-Across the curriculum:

Talk about shampoos and conditioners and how they work (research)

Write a how to paragraph on how to wash your hair or a paragraph on hair care

Compare shampoos for the best buy.

Read shampoo labels, learn about the ingredients.

Learn Arabic words related to hair/hair care:

hair (sha'ar), brush (farashah), comb (musht), shampoo, grease/oil, braid (dafirah), haircut, barber (hallaq), hair clippers

Hair Care 101

"The key is to be encouraging; as children start to take an interest in their own hair and how they style it, this is the time to encourage them to follow an entire regime of good hair hygiene practices. It is important to show a child (when they are willing), how to properly shampoo and rinse their own hair. You can also teach them about towel blotting, detangling, combing and brushing their hair. Help them build a good hair hygiene schedule so that they learn the importance of keeping their hair clean and neat. Try also to get them to develop good eating habits because healthy hair is very dependent on high quality carbohydrates and plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables. Good nutrition will promote shine and condition at any age."

Allâh has sent down the Best Statement, a Book (this Qur'ân), its parts resembling each other (in goodness and truth) (and) oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it (when they recite it or hear it). Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allâh. That is the Guidance of Allâh. He guides therewith whom He wills; and whomever Allâh sends astray, for him there is no guide.

Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:

Allah's Apostle passed by two graves and said, "Both of them (persons in the grave) are being tortured, and they are not being tortured for a major sin. This one used not to save himself from being soiled with his urine, and the other used to go about with calumnies (among the people to rouse hostilities, e.g., one goes to a person and tells him that so-and-so says about him such-and-such evil things). The Prophet then asked for a green leaf of a date-palm tree, split it into two pieces and planted one on each grave and said, "It is hoped that their punishment may be abated till those two pieces of the leaf get dried." (See Hadith No 215, Vol 1).
