Lessson 2 -One             

This lesson and subsequent lessons are similar to the lesson outline for lesson 1 except that as more numbers are learned, more activities can be done.

Objectives

Objectives:

Identify sets of target number

Learn the written symbol for the target number

Match the written numeral to sets of the target number (no writing)

Write the target number

Match the written numeral to sets of the target number (written)

 

Teaching Plan

 

1. Review

Be sure to review previous concepts daily through the use of flashcards, dictation, games, drills, etc. Today, for example, tell student to write the number 0; give a few sets of objects and tell student to show you the groups with 0 objects.

 

2. Identify sets of one

Give student one of the following:

Tracing and Writing Worksheet and Making Sets - One

TJ's Set Building Mat

Place 1 object the jar/each space. Have student tell how many objects are in each space.

Repeat several times.

 

3. Introduce the written symbol.

Give student Tracing and Writing Worksheet and Making Sets - One sheet  or Kidzone Count and Trace Worksheet - Number One

Show student the numeral one. 

Say this is the number one. 

Have student repeat after you, one. With your index finger, trace the number one, then have student do the same while saying one. You could also use sandpaper numbers or trace in sand, flour, rice.

One hunt.  Have student go around the room, look in books for the number one. You can use store receipts, math books, magazines, etc.

Optional ideals: Give student an outline one and let student color in or glue glitter, macaroni, etc onto it.

 

4. Match the written numeral to sets of one (no writing)

On the TJ's Set Building Mat, place different amounts of objects in the spaces, making sure some have the number one. Have student select the 'one" number cards (you may want to make/print 3 of each numeral card) and place it under the appropriate space(s) (ones that have one object).

 

Continue this drill several times. You might even want to use real jars, plates, containers to put objects in.

 

From time to time, throughout the day, ask student how many of an object are in the room, for which the answer is zero or one.

 

5. Write the number one

Give student: Tracing and Writing Worksheet and Making Sets -One

Again, with your finger, trace the numeral.

Have student trace the number with his finger, several times. You may also want to use flour, sand, rice to have student trace in.

Give student Tracing and Writing Worksheet and Making Sets

and show student the bottom of sheet where it shows how to form the number one. Model how to write it correctly and watch as student traces the first line. Make sure he traces in correct direction.

Let student try writing the number on his own in the next row, but be sure to watch to make sure he is writing in the correct direction.  You might laminate this page so student can rewrite. 

 

6. Match the written numeral to sets of one (written)

Next, on the TJ's Set Building Mat, place different amounts of objects in the spaces, leaving a few empty.  Have student write the number one this time under the appropriate space(s) (ones that have one object). You may want to also laminate this for reuse.
