You are here: TJ Home >> Science >> TJ's Life Science Outline
We have just embarked on our life science study so you will currently (as of 5/08) find resources up to (and including) part IV. Insha Allah, as we make our way through, I will post resources for topics 5-8).
I. What is biology?
II. What are living things/What is life?
III. Needs of living things
IV. Cells, Tissues, Organs, Systems
V. Classification of living things
VI. Five Kingdoms
VII. Viruses
VIII. Genetics
Read: http://www.kidsbiology.com/biology_basics/index.php
Read/listen to: Kidsbiology.com - What is Life?
Activities:
Older students:
Have older students make a poster showing characteristics of life (and put in science notebook).
Younger kids:
Have younger students dictate to you what they learned, you write it, and they copy it into their science journal.
Living/Non-living sorting activity from TJ
Read/listen to: Kids Biology.com Needs of Living Things
Activities:
Have older students make a poster of things that living things need (and put in science notebook). Have younger students dictate to you what they learned, you write it, and they copy it into their science journal.
Resources to use during cell study:
Cell Web Quest
Neat activities/assignments to guide your cell study. http://www.scsc.k12.in.us/SMS/Teachers/Martin/intro.htm#Introduction
Diagrams of Cell structure
Enchanted Learning www.enchantedlearning.com has color cell diagrams. You might want to have student print out and place in science journal and/or place up on a bulletin board.
Glossary of Cell organelles

Interactives
• Interactive cell model: http://www.cellsalive.com/cells/cell_model.htm
• Virtual cell tour: http://www.ibiblio.org/virtualcell/tour/cell/cell.htm
Worksheets
Nice activity to use during study. Student pretends he/she is a specific cell organelle and answers questions about his job as that organelle.
Resources to use after cell study:
• Quiz http://www.tvdsb.on.ca/westmin/science/Sbi3a1/cells/cellquiz.htm
• Fill in the blank worksheet about the different parts of cells and their characteristics: http://www.ibiblio.org/virtualcell/Worksheet2.htm
• Venn Diagram to compare plant and animal cells
http://www.teach-nology.com/worksheets/science/cell/venn/
• Cell Organelles Worksheet (6th grade) http://www.scsc.k12.in.us/SMS/Teachers/Martin/cell_organelles.doc
• Cell Flashcards (online) http://www.studystack.com/flashcard-116838
• Word Unscramble (online, cute looks like scrabble tiles) http://www.studystack.com/wordscramble-116838
• Plant and Animal Cells Hangman http://www.studystack.com/hangman-116838
Labs/Hands On Activities
• Incredible, Edible Cell. Make an edible model of a cell http://www.teach-nology.com/worksheets/science/bio/lab1/
Reading/Lessons
A. Introduction to Cells:
•Kids Biology Introduction to Cells, Part I
•Kids Biology - Introduction to Cells, Part II
For older children: Introduction 2 (for older kids, we read the first ones from above, then this one) http://www.biology4kids.com/files/cell_main.html
Activities: Vocabulary: Have students define the bold terms.
B. Cells: A History of Discovery
Kids Biology.com - Cell History, Part I
Kids Biology.com - Cell History, Part II
C. Cell Structure:
Ongoing Activities for cell structure study:
• Have students label the parts of an animal and plant cell as they learn them (student may also want to color in the diagram):
o Animal Cell Diagram to label: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/animals/cell/label
o Plant Cell Diagram to label: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/subjects/plants/cell/label/
• Have student write a daily science journal entry about the organelles as they learn them. Tell what it is/its appearance, and what it does. Or try TJ's Cell Organelle's Notebooking template. Just cut out a template, fill in, and glue into journal or keep page intact (3 templates per page).

This is about as technical as I wanted to get. If you want to study more organelles, more are listed at : http://www.biology4kids.com/files/cell_main.html in the right navigation bar.
We have not yet tackled these areas, so I have not provided resources other than the reading material below.
